Storm Damaged Your Fence? What to Do Next in Brownsville

When a tropical storm or strong thunderstorm rolls through Brownsville, fences are often among the first things to go. Solid privacy fences catch the wind, falling limbs land on them and soft, soaked ground lets posts tip over.

If you're walking out to a fence that's leaning, broken or flat on the ground, here's what to do, in order.

1. Stay safe first

Before you touch anything:

  • Look for downed power lines. If a line is on or near your fence, stay away and call the electric utility. Wet wood and metal fences can carry current.
  • Watch for hanging limbs in trees above the fence.
  • Be careful with broken boards and panels. They have nails, screws and sharp edges.
  • Watch your footing. Ground near resacas and low areas can be soft and slippery after heavy rain.
  • Keep kids away until the area is cleared.

No fence is worth getting hurt over.

2. Secure your pets

A damaged fence is an open door for dogs. Keep pets inside or on a leash until the fence is repaired or temporarily patched. Many pets get lost in the days after a storm.

3. Document everything

Before you move or clean up anything, take photos and videos:

  • Wide shots showing the whole damaged area
  • Close-ups of broken posts, boards, panels and gates
  • Any fallen trees or limbs that hit the fence
  • The fence next to your house for context
  • Date-stamped images if your phone supports it

These records matter for insurance and for repair quotes.

4. Check your insurance

Many homeowners policies cover fences damaged by wind or falling trees, but coverage varies. Call your insurance company or check your policy for:

  • Whether fences are covered
  • Your deductible, which may be a separate windstorm deductible on the coast
  • What documentation they need
  • Whether they want to inspect before repairs

If a neighbor's tree fell on your fence, or your tree fell on theirs, both insurers may be involved.

5. Make a temporary fix if needed

If the fence needs to keep pets or kids in right away, a short-term patch can buy time:

  • Prop a leaning section with a 2x4 brace staked into the ground
  • Close a gap with a temporary panel of plywood or a section of portable fencing
  • Tie a loose gate closed with rope or a chain

Keep temporary fixes simple and safe, and don't climb on a damaged fence.

6. Figure out what's actually broken

Once it's safe, take a closer look. Most storm damage falls into a few patterns.

Leaning sections with solid posts

If posts are intact but tipped, the footings loosened in soaked ground. These can often be pushed back, dug out and reset in new concrete.

Snapped or rotted posts

If posts broke at the ground, look at the break. Clean wood means the wind was too strong. Dark, soft or crumbling wood means the post was already rotting. Either way, it needs replacing, and galvanized steel posts are the upgrade most Brownsville contractors recommend.

Blown-out vinyl panels

Vinyl panels sometimes pop out of their posts in strong wind. If the panels and posts aren't cracked, they can often be reset. Reinforced posts help keep them in next time.

Bent metal

Aluminum and steel fences usually let wind through, but falling limbs can bend pickets and rails. Bent sections can sometimes be straightened. Badly damaged ones are replaced.

Gates

Gates take a beating in storms. Look for bent frames, broken hinges, a leaning hinge post or a latch that no longer lines up.

7. Get a repair quote

After big storms, fence contractors in Brownsville get busy fast. Calling early helps you get on the schedule. When you call, have:

  • Your photos
  • A rough measurement of the damaged section
  • The fence type (wood, vinyl, metal or chain link)
  • Whether insurance is involved

Ask the contractor to note on the quote what was damaged and what's being replaced. It helps with insurance claims.

8. Rebuild stronger

A repair is a chance to fix the weak points that let the fence fail. Ask about:

  • Galvanized steel posts instead of wood
  • Deeper footings, especially in soft ground near resacas
  • Closer post spacing on exposed sides
  • Stainless or galvanized fasteners that won't rust in salt air
  • Reinforced posts for vinyl fences
  • Shadowbox or semi-privacy designs that let some wind through
  • Heavy-duty gate hinges and a stronger hinge post

These upgrades add a little to the repair cost and can save you from the same repair after the next storm.

Watch out for storm chasers

After major storms, out-of-town crews sometimes show up offering quick repairs. Some are fine, but some take deposits and disappear or do poor work. Protect yourself:

  • Get a written quote with a clear scope and price
  • Ask for proof of insurance
  • Avoid paying large amounts up front
  • Be cautious with anyone pressuring you to sign immediately
  • Prefer contractors who work locally year-round

Before the next storm

Once your fence is fixed, a quick yearly checkup each spring helps it ride out the next hurricane season. Push on every post, check the gate, tighten loose boards and hardware, rinse off salt and trim branches hanging over the fence.

Should you repair or replace?

If only a few sections are down and most posts are solid, a repair is usually the better deal. If the storm exposed rot along most of the posts, or the fence was already near the end of its life, replacing it may cost less over the next ten years than patching it again and again. A contractor who inspects the whole fence, not only the damaged section, can give you an honest answer.
